Victoria’s magnificent Pyrenees Wine Region is bursting at the vines for recognition! With a climate similar to its European namesake and a reputation for premium wines this region is coming of age.
The signature grape of the region, Shiraz, has long been recognized by serious wine drinkers and writers alike. The complex and distinctive flavors of the Shiraz grape make it the ‘pick of the vines’ in the Pyrenees Wine Region. A diverse range of varietals can also be enjoyed. Sparkling wine – both red and white – Cabernet, Sangieovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling are all available for tasting at the twenty Cellar Doors branching out from the township of Avoca.
It is surprising that this region is only now emerging as a hidden tourism destination as the first vines were planted here in the early 1960’s – making the Pyrenees one of the oldest wine regions in Victoria. |
