Starting from the town of Anglesea on Victoria’s Surf coast you will be treated to a great 25km loop that will feel at times like endless flow as you navigate the best of the Surf Coast Trail network.

This event is run in partnership with the Surf Coast MTB Club who are renowned in the community for running a fantastic race.

With the course just above the town of Anglesea on the Victorian Surf Coast, this will make a great family weekend away. Oh and don’t forget eMTBs are welcome!

RACE OVERVIEW

Located just over an hour from Melbourne, the Surf Coast is a great place to ride with a heap of different options to keep you entertained. We are excited to be working again with the Surf Coast MTB club which has designed the Shifty Fifty route.

Each year the club designs a unique, fun and challenging route to make sure riders have the best day possible on the bike.

The event village includes hot food, coffee, and good vibes to pump you up ahead of the ride!

THE COURSE

For 50km racers it’s two super fun laps around the coastal hinterland offering some great views and sandy challenges along the way.

Please make sure your bike is clean and use the bike washes to help prevent the spread of disease to the local flora.

SHIFTY SHORTY

  • Course Distance – 25.1km loop
  • Course Elevation Gain – +339m

SHIFTY FIFTY

  • Course Distance – 50.2km loop
  • Course Elevation Gain – +768m

SURF COAST JUNIOR DIRT CRIT

For the little ones, this is a bit of fun BEFORE the Shifty Fifty, so you can watch the kids ride then race yourself.

The course is a 1.4k loop entirely within the Anglesea Discovery Camp. It features a “heartbreak hill” (15m vert) followed by a cool 500m descent before winding through the trees and back to the start/finish arch.

 

Details include:

  • 9am start time (Shifty Fifty starts 10am)
  • 6 – 12yo only
  • $5 entry (don’t need to be an AusCycling member)
  • BMX and MTBs are welcome
  • Fun ride – no placings awarded
  • Race plates & lolly bags included
  • Complete as many laps as you can within 20 mins. No new laps after this time.

Cycling events in Australia are made possible thanks to volunteers like you. When you volunteer for any Big Hill Event, you’ll score a free entry to another Big Hill Event. These are transferable also, so if you’re keen, get in touch and let us know where you’d like to volunteer.

IS THERE A TIME CUT OFF?

Yes, you must complete the first lap by 12.15pm. No 50km rider to start their second lap after this time.

WHERE CAN I SEE RESULTS?

Results will be live online at live.entryzone.com.au.

Spot prizes and series prizes from partners will be drawn during presentations so stick around so you don’t miss out.

ARE THERE FEED ZONES ON COURSE?

Yes! There is a feed zone on Hurst Rd trailhead (halfway point on course). You can also drop bottles in the tub at the star line however they will not return until the LAST rider is home.

CAN I CAMP?

Anglesea Discovery Camp (location of the race village).

There is low-cost accommodation available on the race weekend (Fri – Sun) for competitors that will be first in best dressed. The cost is a donation to the YMCA’s open doors fundraiser (https://victoria.ymca.org.au/support-the-y/ymca-open-doors). WHERE'S THE STARTLINE/EVENT VILLAGE?

Located on the oval within the Anglesea Discovery Camp. Access from both the car parking within the camp (see below) or from Inverlochy St close to Surf Coast Tree Services (19 Inverlochy St Anglesea).

 

WILL THERE BE PRESENTATIONS?

Yes! All categories will have a presentation as you’re racing for the choccies so make sure you stick around until 1:15. We’ll also be giving out spot prizes from our amazing partners.

CLEAN YOUR BIKE

Please make sure your bike is squeaky clean to help avoid the spread of disease in the National Park. All riders will be required to walk their bikes through Parks Vic supplied wash stations before and after the event.

WHAT ELSE IS NEARBY?

GROW Cafe – are offering 10% off food and drink for all competitors. Simply show them your race plate or pic of it. If you’re into healthier options & whole foods, this is the place for you. Located at 11 Inverlochy St approx. 200m from the event village. 

Poppies Cafe & Nursery – located next to GROW. Their cafe requires you to enter the nursery to find it tucked in out the back. Access not as easy with your bike. 

WHERE CAN I PARK?

Approximately 100 cars will be able to park within the Anglesea Discovery Camp.

Entry is from Inverlochy St approximately 50m off the Great Ocean Rd. $5 cash per car to support the Anglesea Discovery Camp (they’re not charging us a fee to host the event).

There’s parking in other areas around Anglesea. Please note yellow line = no standing zone, you will get a fine.
